Mario Mashroom Lamps

If you want to take your devotion to all things Nintendo to the next level, or just fancy having a house that looks like it was invaded by art student layabouts, then Mario Mushroom Lamps are going to turn you on.

mario-shroom-lamps.jpg

Geekologie report:

“Brando.com.hk is selling these mushroom lamps, which resemble the shrooms from Mario Brothers. They’re powered by 4 AA batteries, and their illumination comes from 2 white LEDs. You mash the top to turn them on and off, which is fun. They cost $12, which isn’t too shabby, and come in the colors shown above. Just don’t take a bite of one for a midnight snack.”

At 12 bucks they are somewhat of a bargain, and if you don’t mind sacrificing all vestiges of stylishness or the hope of ever having a girlfriend, you’re onto a winner.

And no, eating them will not make you run around at double speed, grow to twice your height, or become impervious to physical harm. You have been warned.

Samsung and B&O announce their Serenata cellphone

It’s not the first time that Samsung and Bang & Olufsen joined hands to bring a great looking product that might seem flawed at first. I’ll let you look at the picture first.

samsungserenata.jpg

Before you ask: no, the phone isn’t upside down. That is how you’re meant to use it. To see how much of an inconvenient that placement might be, just turn your phone upside down (unless it’s a touchscreen device) and try to use it. If you’re asking yourself right now “how am I supposed to use a phone like this?”, the answer is simple: by making the LCD a touchscreen. There you go, no more problem, just a peculiar shape for a device we’re used to seeing in all different shapes and sizes.

The inside of the device isn’t as weird, and some of it’s features are actually useful like 4GB of internal memory and HDSPA connectivity. The phone will be released in Europe in November, and it’s safe to say that it will probably cost a large sum of euros.

Portable DVD Player That Plans On Using Flexible Full-color OLED

At the twist of its casing, an ultrathin OLED display is revealed, in this portable DVD player concept. No word yet on if this gadget will go into production.

Designer Yeon-shin Seung says he plans to use Sony’s full-color flexible organic electroluminescent display on this device because of the screen’s thin and lightweight form factor. Here’s hoping that he doesn’t use the ancient DVD format is a playback medium, eschewing that old fossil for a dual-format Blu-ray and HD DVD player

Touch Screen Media Playing Watch Phone !!!

iPhone certainly made waves when it was launched and continues to do so for bringing an innovative touchscreen interface to the mobile market. But this little baby isn’t so much pocket sized as it is fit-on-your-wrist sized. Welcome to the world’s first touchscreen 3G (iPhone eat your heart out) media playing watch phone!

phonewatch.jpg

James Bond never had it so good as the MBC1000, a 3G tri-band pen stylus phone, media player and.. eh.. watch, rolled into one compact device. So what’s the downside? The character recognition features of this otherwise must have toy are Chinese only, and the storage capacity is a laughable, woeful, unupgradable 60MB. No problem at all if you are fluent in Chinese script and have a media collection consisting of two low res photos and a single Mp3 track.

Nevertheless, for anyone that wants to walk down the street talking to their wrist and applying a stylus to a miniature Chinese interface, this is pure rock and roll.

Headless Speakers

So obviously when you’ve splashed out hundreds or thousands on an ultra-stylish, great sounding stereo system the first thing you are going to want to do is add a pair of headless dog speakers to the mix.

woofermainjpg.jpeg

Here’s a pretty cool and unsual pair of speakers designed by Buro Vormkrijgers. They look just like two porcelain dogs but instead of a nice head their neck is topped with a loudspeaker. The price is $900 per pair.

New Line of iPods Not Compatible With Old Third Party Video Gear

three_ipods.jpgWord on the street is that the video out function on the new line of iPods is locked if used in conjunction with old video cables and docks from third parties. Apparently, the new iPods will only work with cables featuring Apple’s authentication chip (read: official first party products and a handful of third party), leaving long time video iPod owners in a bind if they have iPod video gear lying around.

Transformer Phone is a dream come true

transphone2.jpg

The latest buzz in the gadget weblog community is that someone actually created a fully functional transformer out of a Motorola MOTOROKR E6 cellular phone. Fully functional as in it can transform, but I don’t think you can make calls on it. It kind of reminds of me of those Transformer toys that would change into robot radios, but the radios would never play. However, the tech is probably there, I think someone really needs to create a cell phone for younger users that transforms. Why not?

Until then, the only fully functioning cell phone transformers will only appear in Michael Bay films.

GE Find-it Remote and Keychains

ge_findit.jpg

Lost things can finally be found! Yes, GE has figured out a way to attach finders to both the keychain and TV remote control.

So, by pushing the button on either device will signal a loud ring. Each find it unit can find up to five other items, so you can buy more and attach them to other things that get lost.

The Remote itself is set up to work with TVs, DVD players, VCRs, and cable boxes. However, I wonder if it is TiVo compatible.

The ‘Find It’ Remote is currently available from SkyMall for $44.95.

Apple’s new iPod line

If you thought that the iPod line had already expanded enough then think again, as Apple has just announced it’s new lineup, and expands the line with one more product called the iPod Touch.

Most of the designs of these new iPods are exactly as you’d expect them to be, but the new iPod Nano seems to be raising a few eyebrows. In the following paragraphs I’ll take a look at all the new, or refreshed iPods and all of their main features.

iPod Shuffle

The iPod Shuffle was the only player that didn’t receive any relevant modifications. The only thing that changed in the iPod Shuffle was it’s color. It is now available in 4 different colors, one of them being red, from the Product Red campaign.

refreshedipodshuffle.jpg

iPod Nano

For the first time in Apple history, the new “younger brother” of the iPod is bigger than it’s predecessor, but for a good reason. According to Steve, a lot of people wanted to watch videos on their iPod Nanos. So Apple cooked up a new Nano which is wider than before, but crams a very nice and high DPI 2″ screen, and all of the features which were exclusive to the iPod 5.5 before.

ipodnano3rdgen.jpg

A few days before it’s unveiling, a picture started circulating the internet about a possible “Fat iPod Nano”, and it appears that that picture, and all of the claims made before it (”screen occupies 50% of the player”, “it’s wider than before…”) were all true.

Unlike most iPods before it, the new Nano’s design isn’t that attractive at first. I think that it takes a while to grow on you, since you probably associate the image of the Nano as a very slim and thin device.

In terms of storage, the new Nano will be available in 4GB and 8GB models, but the 4GB will only be available in metal gray, while the others will have all of the colors seen above.

The software is a bit more appealing now, and showcases your album artwork while you’re browsing the menus on the right side of the screen. You can also browse your pictures using Coverflow, which looks as great as ever. The only difference is that the iPod’s Coverflow has a white background.

You can also purchase and use the games that you could with your 5th generation iPod. Although that’s not a feature that I find particularly attractive, I guess it’s nice to finally be able to play some different games on the go. The iPod Nano comes with three built-in.

iPod Classic

One of the things that Steve mentioned, is that a lot of people give the iPod it’s own name, and refer to it by it’s generation number. With this iteration of the iPod, they decided to give it a name, so it is now called iPod Classic.

ipodclassic.jpg

Besides having an all-metal finish, similar to the Nano’s, this new iPod has an incredible storage capacity. The low-end model comes with an 80GB disk, and the high end model, which costs $100 more, comes with a 160GB disk. This means that the high end iPod now comes with as much, if not more storage than all Apple laptops (and with more storage than my own laptop!).

iPod Touch

Grab an iPhone, take out the phone functions and… voilá! iPod Touch.

ipodtouch1.jpg

It comes with Safari, just like with the iPhone, and YouTube also. And you can also purchase music from the brand new iTunes Wifi Music Store. This new feature will also be available on the iPhone at the end of this month. And if you head down to a Starbucks with Wifi, you’ll be able to purchase the song currently being played there or use the iTunes Music Store on your iPod Touch or iPhone for free.

(No matter how many times I look at it, Starbucks seems to be getting the better end of the deal)

The iPod Touch will be available in 8GB and 16GB models.

iPhone

No, the iPhone didn’t get a fresh design. Come on, it’s only been two months since it’s release! It did however receive a surprising price drop to $399 (the 8GB model) and the 4GB has been dropped. If you run to a local Apple or At&t store, you can purchase the 4GB model for $299.

Oh, and I almost forgot. At the end of this month, you will be able to create ringtones via iTunes from any song you have with a simple custom editor. It will cost $.99 (yes, the same price as the whole song)

Brainzord’s Window-Climbing Robot

The Brainzord window-climbing robot with pulsating brain does exactly what it says on the packet; climbs windows and has a brain that pulsates.

Other reasons why this glass walking bot is the best damn vertical scaler since the previous robotic window-climbing toy include; a vacuum system for high performance climbing and auto reverse for continuous climbing fun times. The device is powered by two AA batteries. The suction movement system is probably not going to be the most fun you are ever going to get out of sucking (go figure), but at $17.95, it may be the cheapest suckering fun, with a pulsating brain, you can pay for. You filthy pervert. [Product Page]

Homer Simpson USB Hub; Not Classic Simpsons

homt1.jpg
Well this is for all Simpson Lovers
But beaware This is what gizmodo had to say :

Unlike the television show, the Simpson’s official merchandise line usually sucks big time. This USB hub is no different; the six inches of plastic will spin around and yell, “Woo-hoo!” Everytime you plug in for some juice… every damn time. Fortunately, there is an option to turn off Homer’s spinning/yelling action, for the preservation of your sanity. However, chances are, if you just dropped $50 on this you have already lost your sanity. No USB hub in the land will save you from living out the rest of your life as Jim Carrey in Me, Myself and Irene. You will of course not be as good looking, charming or funny and you’ll have an annoying USB hub. Tough break, kid.

Artist Builds Life-Sized Paper Boat, Sets Sail

That’s right, a German artist built the life-sized paper boat you see above and plans to sail for 40-days, before it eventually disintegrates. Continue reading for another picture.

The 37-year-old artist came up with the idea one breakfast time, while he was sitting at his kitchen table fiddling with an empty milk carton, which he cut up and made into a scaled-down model. Epoq Bring A Touch Of Class To The Video Watch

If you’re looking for an ultra-portable media player and watch rolled into one, Epoq’s latest offering is well worth checking out. While it isn’t cheap at $199, it does manage to combine two things so far sorely lacking in a single device – great, stylish looks and 2 gigs worth of MP4 video playback.

mp4vidwatch.jpg

Currently sold out and on backorder at First For You, this has obviously been a popular summer spend, thanks I’m sure to some great coverage from Gizmodo.

They describe it:

“Made of stainless steel, this watch has a 1.5-inch LCD screen, 2GB memory, MP4 video and MP3/WMA/WAV audio”

Which makes for a very versatile piece of kit, especially if you note that its also possible to read ebooks on it. Okay, you might have to squint a little to get through war and peace, but this could be a handy way to catch up on your notes on the commute to work.

Interactive Holograms

First shown at this year’s SIGGRAPH convention, this “360 Degree Light Field Display” by USC’s Institute for Creative Technology is capable of producing 3D images that can be viewed by multiple users. Video after the break.

The display consists of a high-speed video projector, a spinning mirror covered by a holographic diffuser, and FPGA circuitry to decode specially rendered DVI video signals. The display uses a standard programmable graphics card to render over 5,000 images per second of interactive 3D graphics, projecting 360-degree views with 1.25 degree separation up to 20 updates per second

3D Blu-Ray Players from Mitisubishi – Can it really work?

mitsubishi-3d-blu-ray-player.jpg>Mitsubishi is looking to take Hi Def movie watching to the next level. Their new 3D Blu-Ray Players. These devices require that you wear 3D glasses that are apparently straight out of the 80s, according to Sci-Fi Tech. Now, what makes this interesting is that we’re not talking about movies shot for 3D. We’re talking about ANY Blu-Ray movie. The player will evidently convert existing movies to 3D on the fly.

I’m keeping a “I’ll believe it when I see it” attitude for this thing

$200,000 Jet Pack

For just $200,000, this turbine-powered jet pack by Jetpack International has “an estimated flight time of 19 minutes, with a range of 27 miles at a max altitude of 250 ft..” Video after the break.

Best news is that it runs on easily available and cheap jet fuel. The $200,000 price tag includes a training course, although it’s unclear what certification (if any) is required to operate a jet pack

Car Of The Future

Future Car

Where will the car of the future come from? Detroit, which fumbled the electric automobile and let Japan grab the lead in hybrids
Not likely. Instead, try NASA, MIT’s Media Lab or Silicon Valley, where the sizzling, battery-powered Tesla Roadster debuted last summer. New technology that promises to revolutionize the automobile as we know it is emerging from research institutions and startups—and these innovations won’t set you back $100,000 like a Tesla will.U.K.-based PML Flightlink put four of its 160-horsepower electric motors in the wheels of a BMW Mini to produce a concept car that shoots from zero to 60 in about four seconds and hits a top speed of 150 miles an hour. The engines also act as brakes, recovering energy that charges a battery and giving the car a range of more than 200 miles. A tiny gasoline motor can be used to recharge the battery for longer trips, on which the car gets 80 miles per gallon.

Another British firm, the Lightning Car Company, has already begun taking orders for its Lightning GT, a sleek, 700-horsepower sports car powered by PML’s wheel motors.

A team of researchers at MIT’s Media Lab, meanwhile, hopes to use the same approach to reduce congestion in today’s crowded cities. They’re experimenting with small electric motors located in the wheels of the CityCar, a tiny, nimble and practically silent vehicle with wheels that turn 360 degrees, enabling it to slip neatly into tight urban parking spaces. Designed to stack like supermarket carts when not in use, the cars could be parked strategically in front of subway stations and office buildings, where people could grab one as needed for short-term, one-way rentals, says Ryan Chin, one of the MIT researchers.

Others are looking to revolutionize the automobile’s engine, not replace it.

The radical new design of the Scuderi power plant splits the cylinders of an internal-combustion engine in two, compressing air in one chamber, then shooting it into a combustion chamber where it’s mixed with gas and ignited. The Massachusetts startup’s design allows recovered braking energy to be stored as compressed air. It also creates a highly efficient combustion environment, promising to double gas mileage while drastically reducing tailpipe emissions.

Colorado-based Sturman Industries is working on another type of under-the-hood innovation. Run by former NASA engineer Eddie Sturman, who designed an electronic valve for Apollo spacecraft in the ‘60s, the company uses digital valves to control the flow of air and fuel to internal-combustion engines, eliminating the need for camshafts.

Going digital means the valves work faster and more precisely than mechanically operated ones, and use far less energy. The valves provide such precise control of combustion, Sturman says, that an engine using them will deliver twice the power, with essentially no emissions.

Cars and trucks using the technology would be able to adjust to different fuels.

“You’ll be able to fill up with diesel one day, and gasoline or ethanol the next,” says company president and chairwoman Carol Sturman. “The valves send information back to a microprocessor which then adjusts the combustion process as needed.” Some of the valves are already in commercial production.

Chevy Volt

chevy volt

General Motors’ plug-in hybrid, the Chevrolet Volt, runs on two electric motors that produce the equivalent of 160 horsepower. Two electrical sockets, one on either side, make charging easy, while a small, on-board internal-combustion engine—GM calls it a “range extender”—can recharge the battery while driving. The company aims to have the Volt on the streets by 2010.

Greased Lightning

grease lightning

A rival to the Tesla Roadster? The 700 horses under the hood of the all-electric Lightning GT aren’t actually under the hood—they’re in the wheels. Made by U.K.-based Lightning Car Company, the vehicle uses four PML Flightlink electric motors (one at each wheel) to propel the car from zero to 60 in less than four seconds. An extended-range model can go 250 miles before you have to plug it into a wall socket for a recharge.

Tesla Roadster

Tesla RoadsterThe battery-powered Tesla Roadster does zero to 60 in four seconds, gets 200 miles between charges and has a motor that weighs 70 pounds. No wonder every dot-com millionaire and Silicon Valley venture capitalist wants one.
